About Me, Sister Caryette

Yo' Sistah Speaks

I wrote my first poem at the age of 14, in the 9th grade at Cass Technical High School in Detroit, Michigan. I wrote a lot of poems and used some of them in my first book of poetry, "This Is It," self-published in 1982 (out of print). At that time, I was living in Oakland, California and my dear friends Mwali Askari and his wife Yolanda showed me how to self-publish my own books. I am forever thankful to them for such an invaluable skill. After writing my first booklet, I toured around the city reciting my poetry and selling my booklet in coffee shops, reggae parties, and at brainstorming sessions with fellow poets. Ah, those were the days.

When I first heard the teachings of The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad in 1980, I heard it through his student, The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan. My first Saviours' Day was in February of 1981. Shortly thereafter, all of the poems I wrote was inspired by what I was learning from The Honorable Minister. I turned my understanding of his words into poetry. These poems allowed me to release all of my thoughts and express my emotions. My poetry is my therapy.

I moved to Los Angeles and wrote my second book of poetry entitled "Black Consciousness Awakening." This was first written around 1986. After writing my second booklet, I had the awesome opportunity to read my poems at colleges and universities, sometimes opening for Brother Dr. Abdul Khallid Muhammad (May Allah be pleased with the work he did as a student in the Nation of Islam). It was then that I first started using the stage name "Yo' Sistah." There have been about three revisions of my second poetry booklet. These revisions included many of the poems from my first book "This Is It."

In 1999, I published my first book of love poems entitled "Romantic Love Poetry for Eternal Soul Mates." Many of those poems were inspired by my imagination and they also include poems from my first booklet.

In 2000, I completed another book of poetry entitled "A Glimple of Heaven." Those poems were inspired by my journey to the Million Family March in October of 2000.

Though originally these poems were in paper booklet form, you can now purchase them as a digital book in PDF eBook format.

I have been honored to recite my poetry at colleges and universities, open mic venues, and community events across the country. I have also self-published other types of eBooks, so please continue to visit this website. I plan to update it often and share my original poems and a blog of my thoughts that I hope you can appreciate.

    Your Virtual Life Coach ...

Now that I'm over a half century, I feel that I can confidently share what I have learned about relationships, religion, health, fitness, diets (I prefer the term "Live-It"), and anything else you'd like to ask. Please feel free to send a message to me, and if appropriate (and with your permission), I will post your question and my answer on this page. Thank you for reading these words.
